Honor Societies
National Honors Society
NHS recognizes Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who achieve excellence in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. You must show examples of your excellence in ALL four areas. A minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA is required to apply. Any semester citizenship grade of "U" disqualifies a student from membership.
(NOTE: As we are still experiencing the effects of a pandemic, extreme flexibility will be given and you need NOT show excellence in all four areas. The typical requirement of 2 hours of community service is NOT required. )
Acceptance Requirements:
1) Submit a complete application
2) Pay your $3 dollar dues
3) Have attend a minimum of 1 club meeting during the window you are applying for OR complete a 1-hour webinar and reflection document
California Scholarship Federation
CSF Membership is based on scholarship and is gained after qualifying grades are earned each semester in grades 10-12. In order to become a member, the student must submit an application each semester the student is eligible. A point system specified in the CSF State By-Laws establishes the membership requirements. To secure eligibility for CSF membership, a student must earn sufficient points from pre-approved course lists. The majority of the required membership points must come from University of California accepted course work. Any semester grade of "U" or "N" disqualifies a student from CSF.
Acceptance Requirements:
1) Submit a complete application
2) Pay your $3 dollar dues
3) Have attend a minimum of 1 club meeting during the window you are applying for OR complete a 1-hour webinar and reflection document
Block Schedule update for Eligibility:
Term 1 and Term 2 will combine to determine eligibility for Fall. Term 3 and Term 4 will combine to determine eligibility for Spring.
For Seniors only: Term 3 will be used to determine Senior year Spring eligibility.
***Please note that dues fees are waived for students receiving Free or Reduced lunch. Please visit the College and Career Center if you have questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why should I join? Is it worth it if I won't earn lifetime membership?
- NHS/CSF is a recognition of your hard work and good grades. Even if you are not a lifetime member, you can still list your semesters of membership on your resume, job applications, and college applications.
- Do I have to qualify every semester?
- Although we would hope that students will qualify each semester, you can miss a couple of semesters and still be eligible for lifetime membership.
- Do I have to take honors classes to be in an honor society?
- No, your eligibility is not based on being enrolled in honors classes. Honors/AP/SBCC Dual Enrollment classes do provide weighted grades, which can add to a student's grade point average and help them qualify for membership. Work with your counselor to challenge yourself appropriately.
- Does my citizenship grade matter?
- Yes, because these are honor societies, your citizenship grades matter. For NHS, any "U" citizenship grade disqualifies a student from membership. For CSF, any semester grade of "U" or "N" disqualifies a student from membership.
- Do I need to qualify in 12th grade?
- For both NHS/CSF, students must earn at least one semester in the 12th grade to qualify for lifetime membership.
- Why do I have to pay dues?
- Your dues payment covers the cost of senior cords, seals, leadership opportunity scholarships, and college visits .
- Can summer school classes count towards NHS/CSF?
- No, only classes taken during the fall or spring semesters count towards eligibility for membership.
- I can't remember how many semesters I have qualified. Who can I ask?
- Please check with your parent advisor to determine how many semesters you have qualified.
- If I didn't pay for past semesters when I qualified, can I pay now in order to qualify?
- No, payment needs to take place during the membership period, which follows after the end of each semester. No retroactive payment for previous semesters.
- Why do I get notified after the semester is over as to whether I qualified?
- Because qualification for NHS and CSF is determined by semester grades, we do not know if students are eligible until the semester is completed. For fall semester, students are notified in February. For spring semester, students are notified in September/October.
- In block schedule, how is eligibility determined?
- Term 1 and 2 are combined to determine eligibility as well as Term 3 and 4.
- Do I have to do community service? Can I use hours that I already turned in to the College & Career Center?
- NHS has a two-hour community service requirement. Students should complete those hours during the semester they expect to qualify by completing two hours through an approved community service organization. Students may use hours that they have already turned in to the College & Career Center for the graduation community service hour requirement. (During Pandemic conditions, this requirement is on-hold)
